Review of scalar and structured data types. Object oriented programming concepts: Classes and abstract data types, inheritence, polymorphisms, operator overloading. Implementation of data structures: Linked lists, multidimensional arrays, records, character strings, stacks, queues, trees and sets. Recursion.

Dynamics of particles: Rectilinear and curvilinear motion, Newton's laws, momentum and angular momentum methods. Work and energy. Dynamics of rigid bodies; kinematics, Euler's Laws, angular momentum. Work and energy methods for rigid bodies.

ME 244 Mechanics of Materials (4+0+0) 4 ECTS 6


Stress and strain. Selected topics in torsion. Simple bending of beams, shearing stresses in beams; beam deflections. Combined stress due to bending, torsion, shear and axial load. Mohr circle. Design of beams and shafts for strength. Statically indeterminate problems. Introduction to energy methods. Buckling of columns.

Error analysis; numerical solution of nonlinear equations and systems of equations; interpolation; curve fitting; numerical integration; numerical optimization; numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. Introduction to mechanical engineering design: Load analysis; materials; stress analysis, stress concentrations; deflections and stability; failure theories of ductile and brittle materials, reliability; dimensions and tolerances; impact, fatigue and surface damage. Analysis and design of shafts, keys, pins, splines, couplings, and flywheels. Lubrication, sliding bearings. Rolling-element bearings.
